Coalition History
In 2004 and again in 2009, the Coalition received Drug Free Communities (DFC) Support Program funding. The DFC program was created in 1997 by the Office of National Drug Control Policy to fund community-based coalitions that engage multiple sectors of the community to prevent youth substance use. The DFC Program has been shown to significantly reduce substance use among youth.
The DFC funds enabled the Coalition to strengthen the infrastructure among local partners to create and sustain a reduction in local youth substance use. Recognizing that local problems need local solutions, the Coalition engaged multiple sectors of the community and employed a variety of environmental strategies to address local substance use problems.
The SAFE Glen Cove Coalition consists of community leaders representing twelve sectors that strategically plan to meet the local prevention needs of the youth and families in their communities. These twelve sectors are: Youth, Parents, Businesses, Media, School, Youth-serving organizations, Law enforcement, Religious/fraternal organizations, Civic and volunteer organizations, Healthcare professionals, State, Local, and Tribal governments, other organizations involved in reducing illicit substance use.
